Competition Officials Meet to Discuss Market Studies
25 November 2019
Thailand, 19-21 November 2019 - Officials from Brunei Darussalam’s Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs, the Indonesia Competition Commission, the Malaysia Competition Commission, and Thailand’s Office of Trade Competition Commission, together with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), convened in Bangkok to discuss the use of market studies by competition agencies.
Delivered for the second time this year, the three-day workshop was designed to reinforce participants’ understanding of the function and purpose of market studies, as well as analysing information gathered during such studies, advocating for competitive outcomes and making recommendations, using various methods of delivery such as practical exercises, case studies and panel discussion. A related workshop was successfully held in Manila, Philippines on 28 – 30 October 2019, please see here for further details.
Miss Nur Izzawanie Zainin, Economic Officer at Brunei Darussalam’s Department of Competition and Consumer Affairs said “The fact that workshop exercises are held just after every topic discussed, really helped me to understand the materials more thoroughly and most importantly helped to apply what has been learned. The three-day workshop has also discussed various topics in depth which are extremely useful for new agency that has never done any market study”.
The workshop aimed to deepen participants’ levels of confidence in various aspects of undertaking market studies and allowed peer-to-peer learning and the sharing of experiences between Brunei Darussalam’s, Indonesia’s, Malaysia’s and Thailand’s competition agencies. It also built and strengthened participants’ professional networks in ASEAN.
Mr Areef Aiman, Assistant Director at the MyCC commented “Representing an authority who has undergone a few Market Studies, the workshop introduces new perspectives and insights in each step undergone for publication of Market Studies. The sessions are truly well-thought after and the exercise undergone enables the participants to share ideas and better understand the key concepts”.
The activity was organised and delivered by the ACCC, with support from the ASEAN Secretariat, as part of the multi-phase Competition Law Implementation Program (CLIP) under the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area Economic Cooperation Support Program. Currently in its third phase, CLIP focuses on supporting ASEAN competition agencies in building knowledge and practical expertise in the region to share resources, skills and techniques.
